Thyroid Surgery

What Is Thyroid Surgery?

Thyroid surgery is performed to remove part or all of the thyroid gland, typically to treat thyroid nodules, goitre, hyperthyroidism, or thyroid cancer. Our expert surgical team offers safe and effective thyroid procedures with a focus on preserving vital structures, ensuring optimal outcomes, and supporting long-term recovery.

What is the Thyroid?

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck. It plays a crucial role in regulating your metabolism, energy levels, heart rate, and temperature through the production of thyroid hormones.

Reasons for Thyroid Surgery

Your doctor may recommend thyroid surgery for:

  • Thyroid nodules (especially if suspicious or growing)
  • Goitre (enlarged thyroid causing symptoms or cosmetic concerns)
  • Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) not responding to medications
  • Thyroid cancer or suspected cancer
  • Compressive symptoms (difficulty swallowing or breathing)

Types of Thyroid Surgery

  • Total Thyroidectomy: Removal of the entire thyroid gland
  • Hemithyroidectomy (Lobectomy): Removal of one lobe of the thyroid
  • Completion Thyroidectomy: Second surgery to remove remaining thyroid tissue
  • Lymph Node Dissection: May be performed in cases of thyroid cancer

Minimally invasive techniques may be used depending on the case and surgeon’s recommendation.

Benefits of Thyroid Surgery

  • Relief from compressive symptoms
  • Removal of potentially cancerous or problematic nodules
  • Control of overactive thyroid conditions
  • Improved quality of life with appropriate hormone management

Before Surgery: Preparation

Medical Assessment

  • Physical exam, blood tests (including thyroid function), ultrasound, and fine needle aspiration (FNA) of any nodules
  • Scans such as CT, MRI, or thyroid scintigraphy may be ordered
  • An anaesthetic assessment to ensure surgical readiness

Medication Management

  • Inform your surgeon about all medications and supplements
  • You may need to stop certain medications such as blood thinners several days before surgery
  • If you are on thyroid medications, dosing instructions will be provided

Fasting

  • Do not eat or drink anything for at least 6–8 hours before surgery

Practical Preparation

  • Arrange transport home and support for the first 24–48 hours
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing
  • Remove any jewelry, especially around the neck

After Surgery: Recovery & Aftercare

In-Hospital Recovery

  • Most patients go home within 1–2 days; some may go home the same day for minor procedures
  • You’ll be monitored for breathing, voice changes, calcium levels, and wound healing

At-Home Care

  • Pain Management: Mild to moderate pain and throat discomfort are common; take prescribed medications
  • Wound Care: Keep your neck dressing clean and dry. Follow instructions for cleaning and dressing changes
  • Diet: Start with soft foods and hydrate well. Some people may experience mild difficulty swallowing initially
  • Voice: Your voice may be hoarse or weak for a few days. This is usually temporary
  • Activity: Avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting for at least 2 weeks
  • Showering: Usually allowed after 24–48 hours unless instructed otherwise

Thyroid Hormone Replacement

  • If your entire thyroid is removed, you’ll need lifelong thyroid hormone replacement (levothyroxine)
  • Regular blood tests will be needed to monitor hormone levels and adjust dosage

Calcium Monitoring

  • If the parathyroid glands are affected during surgery, calcium supplements may be temporarily or permanently needed

Follow-Up

  • Follow-up visits will check your hormone levels, surgical healing, and, if applicable, pathology results
  • Contact your surgeon if you experience:
    • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
    • Voice changes persisting beyond a few days
    • Numbness or tingling (signs of low calcium)
    • Redness, swelling, or discharge from the wound
    • Fever or chills
